Dr. Reinhold Voll(1909–1989) The work and broad experimental research of German doctor Reinhold Voll led his discovery of the electromagnetic substance of ultimate influence on the biologically active point and to the proposal of a replacement of classic acupuncture with electro-acupuncture. Dr. Voll worked out a diagnostic system based on electro-conductivity of acupuncture points. He also introduced a special scale to interpret the results efficiently. Voll published more than 500 scientific works, textbooks and manuals on electro-acupuncture and therapy. As a result, the acupuncture diagnostics followed modern scientific studies and underwent significant further development.
Dr. Voll made an invaluable contribution to science. His first research was based on ancient Chinese medicine, i.e., on the acupuncture points and the meridian system. Based on his thorough studies, he identified eight new meridians, learned how they worked and added them to the twelve meridians discovered by the Chinese 3000 years ago. In addition, he discovered new acupuncture points for diagnostics. The main achievement of Dr. Voll is his transformation of Chinese acupuncture therapy and its philosophy into a diagnostic method accessible to European people. This method includes medicinal testing as well as electro-acupuncture frequency therapy. In 1953, Voll and engineer V. Ferner began developing new methods of acupuncture diagnostics and therapy, which he successfully applied in his practice. In 1956, inspired by his numerous successful experiments, Voll and his colleagues established the Acupuncture Society. In 1961, the society became the International Medical Acupuncture Society and was named in his honor. Voll scientifically proved electro-acupuncture as a new diagnostic and therapy method. He built a strong system of interrelations between active points, internal viscera and tissues of the body. He introduced new methods of individual selection of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical substances into the electro-acupuncture system. At present, membership in Voll’s International Medical Acupuncture Society comprises more than 30,000 doctors with a variety of specialties who continue to develop and improve his method. There are no medical areas where Voll’s method has not shown positive results. Generally, Voll’s methodology is based on the conjunction of classic Chinese acupuncture, homeopathy and concepts of modern experimental physics. What has Voll borrowed from the Chinese? All internal viscera bear their own protection areas, located on the skin, and they are arranged in so-called biologically active points. Many centuries ago, this idea was discovered by Chinese healers and they were arranged in the meridian system. The Chinese healers established that there was a particular meridian responsible a heart, another responsible for allergy a third for liver, etc. The points were massaged, needled, burnt. And after that treatment, the patient appeared to recover partially or completely. The Chinese explained the reaction as follows: if the person is ill, then his system of yin and yang is misbalanced within a particular meridian; after point stimulation, the patient recovers yin and yang balance. Voll managed to explain the results in modern scientific terms. Voll’s method (Electro-Acupuncture Diagnostics by Voll) applies a brass needle electrode (active electrode) and a cylindrical form electrode, which the patient holds in his hand. The results of these diagnostics are represented as a solid system of electro-conductivity attributable to internal viscera, tissues and their related acupuncture points. In addition, Voll discovered that the therapeutic influence of the current does not depend on the current’s intensity, but on its frequency. It appeared that various frequencies, though not significantly different from each other, led to differing results. These observations were published in his book Twenty Years of Acupuncture Diagnostics and Therapy (Voll R., 1975). Voll’s method has proven to be efficient in its influence on organs, their regeneration and functionality.
